Updated Property Manager

Hipcamp Host Property Manager

Hipcamp is a two-sided marketplace for camping on private land. Think: Airbnb for camping!

THE PROJECT

Campers’ struggle to understand and select the ideal campsite on a property best for them led to negative reviews from mismatched expectations. To address this consumer problem, the Host team had to overhaul how Hosts configured their campsites upstream.

MY ROLE

As Design and Research Lead, I facilitated a complete redesign of the Host property management experience. Leading six rounds of user interviews, I iterated countless times across five key mobile + desktop flows. As a ground-up build, I established new patterns and components for our new design system.

THE OUTCOME

The MVP has made a meaningful impact even as replatforming will continue through the end of the year. Camper retention has increased 30% as the search experience improved across 175K impacted campsites. Hosts have praised the new design during user testing, and are eager to use it.

The Problem

Not all sites on a campground are created equal. Hipcamp‘s browsing experience prevented campers from picking the right site for them on a Host’s property.

Highlights & Key Features

Property page

Goals

Enable Hosts to easily navigate between the details of their property, sites, extras, and map

Help Hosts understand the updated property-site IA, reinforcing how their online listing will be presented to campers

The “How”

Create a single location for Hosts to manage all details across their property, using a tabbed format to break down the information

Outcome

When asked to make specific edits during user testing (e.g. change the price of a site, update the size of the property), 90% of Hosts navigated to each point with ease

Successfully created and integrated new design system components (header, tabs, buttons, carousel)

“Compared to the past, this is much easier to understand… and it’s more comprehensive” - John, Hipcamp Host in Washington

Sites tab

Goals

Enable Hosts to seamlessly view and navigate between their multiple sites

Motivate hosts to improve their listings

The “How”

Improve the search experience by introducing site search, filtering, and grouping by accommodation type

Emphasize visual previews and missing information

Outcome

After MVP launch, 68% of Hosts made updates where missing information was indicated

“This feels a lot simpler. No more bouncing around to find things. The thumbnails are functional and help me see what Campers see” -Ted, Hipcamp Host in California

“I love that I can see all my sites in one place.” - John, Hipcamp Host in Washington

Site Editor

Goal

Allow Hosts to easily edit their sites (for the first time ever in-app!)

Motivate hosts to improve their online listing to increase camper engagement

The “How”

Create a clear hierarchy for the editing experience

Prioritize the categories that Hosts edit most often (photos, description, pricing, capacity)

Create prominent indicators for missing information that needs attention

Outcome

In the MVP, Hosts that added site-specific information saw a 21% bump in booking conversion

100% of Hosts successfully identified and fixed missing information during user testing

“Honestly, as good as Airbnb’s editor is, I think this is even better!” - Josh, Hipcamp Host in California

“I’m constantly making changes. This makes it a lot easier for me to find what I’m looking for” - Elizabeth, Hipcamp Host in Milwaukee

Photo uploader

Goal

Improve listing quality by collecting more photos per Host

The “How”

Create a mobile-friendly flow for adding site-specific photos to listings

Enable ability to upload, edit, and re-arrange photos with ease

Outcome

Hosts that added site-specific photos saw a 21% bump in booking conversion

Since MVP launch, 20K Hosts have uploaded more than 700K photos on the mobile app

“I love that I can upload photos directly from my phone” - Daniel, Hipcamp Host in Colorado
